Cycling
Exploring on two wheels is a great way to see the spectacular Ardnamurchan scenery and get active at the same time. Cyclists can choose to stick to the roads or go cross country on mountain bikes and experience the many off road paths and tracks across the peninsula.
Which cycle route is right for you?
There is a broad range of cycling opportunities across the Ardnamurchan area. If you want to take it easy, opt for a gentle short ride where you can focus on absorbing the vistas, or challenge your body to endure a long distance cycle and get to see all lots of the coastline in one ride, or maybe you’re an experienced mountain biker and you fancy trying a highly technical ride up one of the local hills or mountains.
To give you an idea of the number of routes you have to choose from, there are eleven off-road cycle routes in the Sunart Oakwoods alone, ranging in length from a light touch 3km to a grueling 64km. In addition to these routes, the local Nevis Range and the surrounding area of Lochaber offer another wide variety of trails that suit a range of abilities, including specialist mountain biking routes. There are also many road routes if you prefer to ride on the roadside rather than take your bike cross country.
If you’re keen to take on a cycling challenge and you are feeling brave, we’d recommend you head over to Leanachan. The area hosts the annual mountain bike World Cup Cross Country and the Witch's Trails and the routes you can have a go at include sections from both the World Cup trail and the World Championship trails – a real challenging ride. Another route that will challenge even seasoned cyclists is the Ardnamurchan circuit. This a big, hilly and unforgiving route that spans 80 miles and covers most of the area west of Loch Linhe, but you’ll be rewarded with some of Scotland’s best scenery along the way, including castles, lochs, picturesque villages and plenty of spectacular views in all directions.
You can hire a bike when you arrive, or bring your own from home, then all you need is a helmut, a map and some get up and go before you can explore Ardnamurchan on two wheels and revel in the sense of invigoration you get from a great ride.
